Reasons to use Details

  • To see how PubMed translated your search: Sometimes you may find that PubMed interpreted your search in a way you had not expected. This may help you understand your retrieval and may also point out a misspelled word.

  • To edit your search: You may want to edit your search query. The enlarged Details box makes it easier to see all your search terms, search field tags, and edit your current strategy. When you have finished making changes, click on the Search button beneath the query box.

  • To save your search strategy: If you want to save the current strategy for later use, click on the URL button. PubMed will return to the search results screen. The translated search will be displayed in the query box and embedded as part of the URL that your browser displays. Next, use your Web browser's bookmark or favorites feature to save this URL. You may want to use your browser's edit bookmark/favorite capability to rename the bookmark or favorite to something meaningful to you. Another way to save your search strategy and get automatic e-mailed updates is to use the My NCBI feature (see My NCBI Saving Searches).

Note: Searches that are created using a search statement number for example, #1 or #2, should not be saved using the URL button as the search statements represented by these numbers are lost when History is automatically deleted after 8 hours of inactivity.
