Indexing principles for Category E - Techniques and Equipment

Many of the MeSH headings in Category E exist also as subheadings.

The “duplicate” MeSH headings are reserved for general articles only or for articles on the concept as a discipline or a specialty. In the vast majority of cases, however, the subheading is used with a specific disease, organ, or tissue.

Several subheadings are permitted with the terms in Category E; however, not all of these subheadings are permitted with each Category E term.

In many cases, no subheading is needed with a Category E term.

Do not routinely add the subheading /methods on techniques; use it only when the author describes the method in detail or presents a new or unique method associated with a particular Category E term

Do not routinely use the subheading /utilization on Category E terms. Use it only for articles on the level of use of a particular technique or procedure.

To index instruments or equipment, use the subheading /instrumentation on the technique if there is no specific MeSH heading for the instrument or equipment.

There are many specific surgical techniques in Category E. Coordinate these with the disease /surg. If there is not a MeSH heading for a particular surgical technique, index the organ or tissue with /surg .
