Instructions for FTP of TOXLINE® Subset Data Files

Access instructions are for NLM TOXLINE Subset licensees only; do not share directory or file names with others. Be sure to use the IP address you registered with NLM. All other IP addresses will be blocked from retrieving the files.

Full file replacements containing all new and/or maintained records for the various subfiles for TOXLINE Subset, when available, will be on NLM's server on or shortly after the 28th of each month that such records are available. While NLM does not guarantee a replacement TOXLINE Subset subfile each month, if one is available it will be on the server at the end of each month. Some TOXLINE Subset subfiles are replaced at irregular intervals.  A ‘ready’ file containing the number of records in the corresponding update file is also prepared.  Each subfile’s DTD is also available on the server.

FTP to NLM's anonymous FTP server; login as a non-fee/anonymous user; use your e-mail address as password; binary mode.

ftp://ftp.nlm.nih.gov/nlmdata/.toxspeclease/

There are three TOXLINE Subset subdirectories containing data files and DTDs:

  1. archival subdirectory - contains the subfiles that are not currently updated.  The file named ‘archival’ contains data from several archival subfiles and other files in this subdirectory contain data from the individual remaining archival subfiles. There is a corresponding DTD for each data file. The overall archival DTD defines the elements for all the archival files.

  2. current subdirectory - contains data and DTD files for each of the subfiles that are currently updated.  An overall DTD defining the elements for all the current files is not available.

  3. ipa subdirectory - contains the IPA archival subfile and DTD.  Access to this subfile is restricted to licensees who advise NLM that they have contacted ASHP (the producer of IPA) and received permission to get the data from NLM.

From the subdirectory, at the FTP prompt enter: get filename
Examples:
ftp://ftp.nlm.nih.gov/nlmdata/.toxspeclease/archival/
                         get archival.dtd
                         get archival.xml.zip
ftp://ftp.nlm.nih.gov/nlmdata/.toxspeclease/current/
Note that the date of the file update is reflected in the filenames (e.g., 20080928 is September 28, 2008)
get ntis.dtd.20080928 – for the dtd
get ntis.ready.20080928 – for record count in data file
get ntis.xml.20080928. zip – for the data file

A TOXLINE factsheet is available from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/factsheets.html and the TOXLINE Subset is described at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/databases_toxline.html.  The toxicology citations may be searched at NLM at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/.
