HSDB: Change in Element Name

March 14, 2008

A decision was made at the 71st meeting of the Hazardous Substance Data Bank's Scientific Review Panel (SRP) to change the name of the XML element OOPL (abbreviation for Other Occupational Permissible Levels) to OSRG (abbreviation for Other Standards Regulations and Guidelines). All data currently in the OOPL field will remain after the change; however, the name change will allow additional information to be put in this data field. The HSDB DTD will be edited accordingly.

The change in element name will be reflected on records in XML files distributed to licensees no earlier than June 28, 2008 (possibly later).

Deleted NLM MARC 21 Format Records

January 18, 2008

The MARC file containing all the bibliographic records deleted by NLM between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, is now available for licensees to ftp from the same location on NLM's ftp server where the appropriate base files are posted.  This MARC file is called "deleted.20080101" and contains 2,981 MARC-formatted records. There is also a label file, "deleted.20080101.label".

Important: The file "deleted.20080101" contains all the records NLM has deleted from its bibliographic file during the designated timeframe. This means some licensees will receive deletes for records they may never have actually received as current or updated cataloging. Be sure to use the delete file only to remove those records which you do have from your system. Do not add any of them as new or modified records.

Licensees who are new recipients of NLM's MARC bibliographic records in 2008, as well as ongoing licensees who are discarding their pre-2008 records and reloading with the 2008 base files, do NOT need "deleted.20080101". The records in this delete file were removed from NLM's database prior to the pull of the 2008 base files.

For Catfile, CatfilePlus, and Serfile Licensees

January 10, 2008

FOR MARC SUBSCRIBERS

The updated MARC basefiles for Catfile, CatfilePlus, and Serfile are now available on the NLM ftp server. These base files are each complete in a single file. Loading the base files on an annual basis is optional for MARC subscribers. If you have loaded each of the monthly updates, there is no need to reload the base files.

The MARC file containing all the bibliographic records deleted by NLM between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, will soon be available for licensees to ftp from the same location on NLM's ftp server where the appropriate base files are posted. The file will be named “deleted.20080101.” An announcement will be made when the deleted file is posted.

FOR XML SUBSCRIBERS

The updated XML basefiles for CatfilePlus and Serfile are also now available on the NLM ftp server. The catplus base file is in 4 parts, named “catplusbase1of4.2008.xml”, “catplusbase2of4.2008.xml”, etc. The Serfile base file is complete in a single file, named “serfilebase.2008.xml”. For the last few weeks of December 2007 the updated CatfilePlus and Serfile base files were mistakenly posted with the old date 2007 in the file name. NLM apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

The XML baseline files should be used to completely replace all records previously distributed.
