Nathaniel Chapman's dissertation for his doctorate in medicine is dedicated to Benjamin Rush, MD, with whom Chapman studied, eventually graduating from the Medical School of the University of University of Pennsylvania in 1801. Chapman explored the symptoms and treatments of rabies.

Nathaniel Chapman, MD
Born in Fairfax County, Virginia, Nathaniel Chapman studied medicine in Philadelphia and Edinburgh. In 1804, he returned to Philadelphia where he taught and practiced medicine for the rest of his career. He was a noted editor, educator, and, in 1817, founded the Medical Institute of Philadelphia.
