Health hazards associated with radioactive materials have been a concern for the Service throughout most of this century. Since 1979 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia have had the primary responsibility of responding to environmental emergencies involving radiation and chemicals such as those caused by spills during transport fires, and other incidents. They assisted in the environmental epidemiologic investigation following the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor accident in 1979.
