IN ABOUT 1850, BRITISH
SURGEON John Hutchinson (18111861) developed the
spirometer for his research in respiratory physiology. Soon smaller
devices were being used widely by patients with lung diseases
in Europe, Australia, and the United States. Today, physicians
use electronic digitized spirometers and peak flow meters to
monitor speed and strength of breathing as well as lung capacity.
