Who we are beneath the skin amazes and scares us, entertains,
repels, fascinates, inspires. Since 1500 A.D., when illustrations
of human anatomy first began appearing in print, artists have
employed fantastic settings, bizarre juxtapositions, antic poses,
intense colors, and fanciful metaphors, to display scientific
knowledge of the body and its interior--a dream anatomy that reveals
as much about the outer world as it does the inner self. Drawn
largely from the Library's collections, Dream Anatomy shows
off the anatomical imagination in some of its most spectacular
moments, from 1500 to the present.

Three upcoming Thursdays have been set aside for a Teacher's Open House
at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The Open House aims to inform
educators about the diverse educational resources available at the Library.
During the last school year, a number of school groups visited the Library
and used our exhibition as a gateway to expand their understanding of
health, technology, history and culture. We hope more teachers will
take advantage of the "exhibition classroom" at the NLM.
The new school year begins with the opening of a new exhibition, Dream
Anatomy, which will be on display from October 9, 2002-July 31,
2003. Teachers who attend the Open House will have the opportunity to:
- Preview Dream Anatomy, an excellent experiential and interdisciplinary
teaching resource for grade levels 7-12.
- Discuss various educational programs with the Exhibition Educator
- Receive an Exhibition Educational Resource Packet
