This laboratory is driven by the surgical research of Robert Bartlett, M.D. and his work on extra corporeal circulation.
The collection contains papers, artifacts, photos and slides related to the work undertaken in this laboratory, including:
- original ECMO machine used for original patients at U.C. Irvine and University of Michigan, 1972-1981;
- components of subsequent ECMO devices, 1981-2000 such as several membrane oxygenators, several blood pumps, access catheters from many patients;
- laboratory prototypes of ECMO machines and pumps;
- laboratory experimental records, 1972-2000;
- correspondence and drafts related to papers, grants, and presentations, 1962-2000;
- hospital records of all U.C. Irvine ECMO cases, 1971-1980, including original neonatal series and original cardiac support series;
- hospital records of 1200 ECMO cases at University of Michigan, 1980-2000;
- photos of lab and clinical research, 1965-2000.
