Collection Summary

During 1951 selected non-current records of the Army Medical Library were transferred to the History of Medicine Division in Cleveland, Ohio. These records form the collection known as the Army Medical Library Archives.

The records were reboxed into ten containers (instead of the original nine used when first processed) in October 1986. At the same time they were reorganized to follow more closely the original coded and numbered filing arrangement used in the AML and found in the first folder of Box 1. The subject series labelled B-16, "Friends of the AML Organization," although received by the History of Medicine Division and cited by Dr. W. Miles in his history of the National Library of Medicine, is now missing.

The materials on the development of the AML Classification were received in the History of Medicine Division on 30 December 1954. although they were not in the subject codes or numbering system of the other files, they were added to the AML Archives material. The material is now found in Boxes 9 and 10 of the collection.

The collection as a whole is rich in material on the Library, its day-to-day operations, and its growth. Especially of interest are the summary histories in Box 1, information on proposed new buildings, merger plans with the Library of Congress, and the very thorough records detailing Mary L. Marshall's role in the development of the AML Classification.
