Items Housed in Plastic Enclosures

Freezing Procedures:

  • Leave items that are going to be air dried after freezing as they are. Remove the plastic prior to air drying.
  • Leave items that are going to be vacuum freeze-dried as they are if at least one side of the enclosure is unsealed (slit open an edge or clip corners if necessary).

For normal freeze drying, or freezing followed by desiccant drying:

  • For smaller quantities: Remove the plastic enclosures, place items in folders or place interleaving between items, and then pack in containers. Keep items wet if appropriate for that material (coated paper, photographs).
  • For larger quantities: Pack items for freezing as they are and note on the container that “items inside are encapsulated and must be removed from plastic enclosures prior to drying.”
