ADePT Health allows users to produce quickly and with a minimal risk of errors most tables that have become standard in applied health equity analysis. The tables emerge in a standardized format, and are based on a set of methods that are widely accepted in the literature. Through its standardized tables, ADePT Health facilitates comparisons of health equity over time within countries, and between countries. The software uses the methods outlined in "Analyzing Health Equity Using Household Survey Data: A Guide to Techniques and Their Implementation" by Owen O'Donnell, Eddy van Doorslaer, Adam Wagstaff and Magnus Lindelow, copies of which can be ordered online or downloaded for free at http://www.worldbank.org/analyzinghealthequity.

Effectiveness and Comparative Effectiveness Reviews, systematic reviews of existing research on the effectiveness, comparative effectiveness, and comparative harms of different health care interventions, are intended to provide relevant evidence to inform real-world health care decisions for patients, providers, and policymakers. In an effort to improve the transparency, consistency, and scientific rigor of the work of the Effective Health Care (EHC) Program, through a collaborative effort, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Scientific Resource Center, and the Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPCs) have developed a Methods Guide for Comparative Effectiveness Reviews. We intend that these documents will serve as a resource for our EPCs as well as for other investigators interested in conducting Comparative Effectiveness Reviews.

Out of Options: Why So Many Workers in Small Businesses Lack Affordable Health Insurance, and How Health Care Reform Can Help

Small-business owners and employees are among those who stand to benefit the most from provisions in some of the current health reform proposals under consideration by Congress, according to a new Commonwealth Fund analysis. Currently, 39 million Americans work for companies with fewer than 50 employees, and only 25 percent of them have health insurance through their employer.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity (FOA) is to support Research Demonstration and Dissemination (R18) grant applications from organizations that will implement safe practice interventions that demonstrate evidence of reducing or eliminating medical errors, risks, hazards, and harms associated with the process of health care. These 24 month implementation projects will inform AHRQ, providers, patients, payers, policy makers, and the public about how safe practice interventions can be successfully implemented in diverse health care settings and lead to safer and better health care for all Americans. This FOA follows the release of an earlier FOA in 2005 that resulted in the release of successful implementation projects and toolkits available to the public.

Results from a 50-State Medicaid Budget Survey for State Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010

The survey finds that, based on initial legislative appropriations, Medicaid spending across states is expected to grow by an average of at least 6.3 percent in fiscal 2010. But officials in three-fourths of the states are concerned that those appropriations will not be enough, leading to more budget shortfalls and more pressures to trim services and spending.

NSDUH is the primary source of statistical information on the use of illegal drugs by the U.S. population. Conducted by the Federal Government since 1971, the survey collects data by administering questionnaires to a representative sample of the population through face-to-face interviews at the respondent's place of residence. The survey is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is planned and managed by SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS).

The Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation co-sponsored this briefing to have a panel of experts answer questions about how some aspects of pending health reform proposals may have a substantial impact on rural care. What provisions in the various reform proposals affect rural health care? What particular challenges need to be overcome in order to improve care delivery in rural areas? What aspects of health reform will require special accommodation in rural areas? Are delivery systems in rural areas currently able to handle the influx of new patients coverage expansion would bring? How does HIT factor into rural reform?

Trends in Satisfaction and Confidence in Health Care, by Insurance and Health Status: Findings from the 2009 EBRI/MGA Health Confidence Survey, and Social Security Reform: How Different Options Might Affect Future Funding

This article examines public opinion by insurance status and health status, using data from the 2009 EBRI/Mathew Greenwald Associates Health Confidence Survey. It finds that the uninsured are more likely than individuals with insurance coverage to be dissatisfied with the quality of health care received and they are less confident in various aspects of health care. Similar differences in satisfaction and confidence are found by health status.

A study published in the October 2009 issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery suggests a disconnect between the way wrist-fracture patients and those with a spine or hip fracture are managed and evaluated. The study, conducted in 2007 among 97 percent of the women in Korea, reviewed the incidence of fractures around the hip, spine, and wrist in female patients age 50 and older and the prescription frequencies of bone density scans for osteoporosis, along with the use of medications for its treatment.
