IPv6 Status

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has commenced a project to provide access to its public information services via native IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). IPv6 is an updated and improved Internet communications protocol as compared to IPv4 — the current default Internet protocol. For the near future, IPv6 and IPv4 will co-exist on the network and be transparent to the end user, including users of NLM services. Existing software clients on end user computing devices will be capable of automatically selecting IPv4 or IPv6 on behalf of the user as is appropriate. Native IPv6 does not rely on tunneling the protocol via IPv4.

NLM is phasing in the availability of IPv6 support on an application by application basis. The following are applications that were activated for IPv6 during February 2012:
