Health Literacy Education Initiative

University of North Texas Health Science Center
Gibson D. Lewis Library
Ft. Worth TX

The University of North Texas Health Science Center, Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library partnered with the University’s Physician Assistant Studies program in a project designed to increase the health literacy of pediatric caregivers.

The overall project had two audiences:
healthcare/information consumers and patient educators, in this case, students in the physician assistant program. The students were given an overview of health literacy and patient-provider communication. The library provided instructional sessions on searching NLM’s consumer health databases. With these skills in hand, the thirty one students in the program conducted one-on-one patient education sessions at a pediatric clinic. Sixty-eight individuals received instruction from the students in accessing and using MedlinePlus.

Feedback from the program was so favorable that the project will be extended to involve students in the spring 2008 physician assistant program.

Patient Information Kiosk

Oklahoma State University Medical Center
L.C. Baxter Medical Library
Tulsa OK

A computer-based patient information kiosk was placed in the Oklahoma State University Medical Center hospital. The kiosk, accessible 24 hours a day, provides patients and family members with access to MedlinePlus and other web-based consumer health information resources.  A specially designed web site was created for the interface of the kiosk.  The web site provides links to MedlinePlus and other quality websites, general information on library services, and links to the most common diseases seen at the hospital.

Project staff created numerous handouts, bookmarks and posters to publicize the availability of the kiosk.  Bookmarks were distributed to waiting rooms and the hospital admissions area; posters were hung in waiting rooms and elevators.  The kiosk was unveiled on June 22, 2007 with sixty-eight individuals in attendance.

In the coming months, project staff will provide demonstrations on the use of the kiosk as well as classes on searching the web.
