Disaster Planning for Health Sciences Libraries

logo for Disaster Planning for Health Sciences Libraries

The Disaster Planning for Health Sciences Libraries blog was created in the fall of 2006 by Dan Wilson and Susan Yowell at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Library. The purpose of the blog is to gather together news, information, resources and research strategies for use by those interested in disaster planning, not only for health sciences libraries, but for other environments as well. The blog contains links to model plans, vendor information, and other resources related to emergency preparedness. To date, the blog has received over 5,000 views, and contains over 200 postings. The blog’s editors seek to keep the blog current by mining the Internet for new information and by responding to the information needs apparent from the blog statistics on searching and referrals from other sites.

MaFlo’s Health & Awareness Team

MaFlo’s Health and Awareness Team formed in 2004 as a result of founder Marilynn Lance-Robb’s participation in several successful community health outreach programs. As a beauty salon operator in rural Georgetown County, SC, Marilynn recognized that her clientele of 50+ individuals needed reliable information about their health concerns. In the beginning Marilynn, who also works in the Carvers Bay Branch Library, would locate information at the library and distribute it to them on their next visit. Questions ranged from minor aches and pains, to medical procedures and chronic illnesses. Thanks to a Welcome Award from the SE/A, she was able to place a computer in the salon for speedier response. Eight or more clients use the computers daily to learn about the Internet, look for health information or do other work.

MaFlo’s Health and Awareness Team started with 25 members of the Mt. Olive Ensemble Church Choir. The 10 current active members help Marilynn in her community outreach efforts by providing classes on basic Internet and computer skills, finding health resources and nutrition and exercise classes. They participate in a community walking group. Their outreach efforts strive to demonstrate a healthy way of living in the hope that other communities will join in the challenge to fight diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. Marilynn was part of the delegation that accepted the NCLIS Health Award for Libraries in Bethesda in May 2006 that honored the Medical University of South Carolina’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) 2010 Diabetes Coalition Library Partnership.

MaFlo’s motto is: “The Hands That Knows the One That Grows”
MaFlo’s slogan is: “From Hair, To Yonder”

Teen Health Initiative

logo for Eastern Shore AHEC

The Eastern Shore Area Health Education Center (AHEC) staff started the Teen Health Initiative to increase student awareness of quality health websites and acquaint them with MedlinePlus, the Talbot County Free Library's (Maryland) databases, and AHEC resources. Talbot County High School teens as well as health and anatomy and physiology teachers and, the Talbot County Free Library patrons are the target audiences.

The first presentation details the use of MedlinePlus and discusses the need for reliable health information. Further information is shared, based on the needs of the students, teachers, and class. Carole Wade, Learning Resource Coordinator, and Cyndi Slacum, Health Careers Coordinator, meet with the teacher to learn the objectives of the unit to be taught and find websites useful in teaching it. Students research a health topic, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, and then present their findings to the class. The students have their own laptops and easily follow the instruction utilizing different websites. A booklet of health websites is presented to each student, including the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center booklet Reliable Health Information on the Internet found on the web at: http://www.hopkinsbayview.org/healthylinks/index.html.

Presentations have been given also at both branches of the Talbot County Free Library for teens and their families. Teens are asked to share their new knowledge with peers and with family members. The long-term objective is to help teens and families have better access to reliable health information.
