Type 2 diabetes patients aiming to control their condition with a healthy diet face a big obstacle, new research reveals: high food prices.

A fresh analysis published in the American Journal of Public Health shows that as prices for healthy foods go up, so do blood sugar levels among people with diabetes. The finding comes from a close look at the results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, for the years 1999 through 2006.

The survey takes an annual dietary snapshot of American food habits, while noting key indicators of blood sugar status. The study team also examined the cost of groceries for the same timeframe using statistics drawn from the Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database.

In the end, higher prices for healthy staples, specifically fresh produce and low-fat dairy products were linked to higher blood sugar levels, 3 months down the road, among people with diabetes. And the problem seemed to be most apparent among low-income people with diabetes.
