MEDICAL SUBJECT HEADINGS

ANNOTATED ALPHABETIC LIST

GENERAL INTRODUCTION - 2002

The Annotated Alphabetic List is an alphabetic presentation of some portions of the National Library of Medicine (TM) (NLM (TM)) thesaurus, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®). It is adapted to the needs of indexers, catalogers, and persons searching the NLM online databases and it is recommended for all MEDLINE® users as it contains information not available in the edition of MeSH designed for users of Index Medicus®. This 2002 edition retains the searching syntax used for ELHILL® although billed public access to ELHILL, NLM's retrieval system, was discontinued on September 30, 1999.

Users should make the appropriate syntax changes for the system they are using. These may include one of the NLM's web-based retrieval systems: PubMed® for journal citations, LocatorPlus(TM) for citations previously found through CATLINE®, AVLINE®, or SERLINE®, and NLM Gateway (TM) for journal citations and datafiles such as AIDSLINE® and AIDSTrials® as well as non-NLM retrieval systems.

PubMed, NLM Gateway, LocatorPlus, and have help documentation and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) online. Additional information about MeSH, including a browser of MeSH that provides extensive data, is also available online.
