There are three major portions of the UMLS Knowledge Sources

The Metathesaurus, about which we are going to talk a lot,

is the vocabulary portion

Also developed a lexicon and special tools for dealing with text

The semantic network allows some specialized reasoning based on broad categories of objects under discussion
