Publication Types - Genre Terms - 2002

Since 1991, MeSH has included Publication Types, with the mnemonic PT, to describe the form of presentation of an article or other work. In the area of bibliographic control of various materials, in various media and formats, genre terms were developed to characterize the form of presentation. NLM has expanded its Publication Types to include genre terms useful in the MEDLARS databases. Genre terms are used to describe materials based on their cultural or literary form such as addresses or sermons or their physical form such as broadsides or posters.

The following is a complete list of all Publication Types indicating those generally used for indexing of current articles and those used for cataloging. The year in parenthesis is the date of introduction of the term, in either its present or a directly equivalent earlier form.

Most of the Publication Types introduced in 1991 were added to retrospective MEDLINE citations as well. Beginning in late 1998, the NLM Cataloging Section began use of Publication Types in lieu of form subheadings, for example: Bibliography [Publication Type] is be used in place of /bibliography. For additional information, see Cataloging Practices. Note: Because of input from organizations that cooperate with NLM in building some of the MEDLARS databases, certain files may contain publication type values not included in the lists below such as LAW (PT) in BIOETHICSLINE and AIDSLINE.
