Allan joined the MeSH Section in 1988 following a year as an NLM Associate. He serves as the senior technical editor of MeSH content and is involved in the creation and maintenance of subject headings in most disciplines, with special emphasis on virology, taxonomy, and anatomy. Allan holds a M.L.S. from Syracuse University, a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maryland, and did graduate work in pharmacology.
Prior to entering the information field, Allan was a full-time chess professional. In his spare time he is still an active tournament player, teacher, and chess journalist. He holds the titles of U.S. Life Master and International Master of correspondence chess.
