AD 1640: Intertribal war forces Dakota peoples westward

An intertribal war precipitates the migration of Dakota peoples from what is now known as northern Minnesota to the Great Plains. Some move as far west as the Rocky Mountains; others migrate into the southern Great Plains. Their cultures come to depend on riding horses and hunting buffalo.
