1999: Financial grants promote research on Indian health

The Native American Research Centers for Health introduces grants to promote health research in American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Grants are awarded to tribes that subcontract with researchers so that the tribes remain in control of the research. Objectives are to develop Native scientists and health professionals and increase the capacity of research institutions to work with Native communities.

The Indian Health Service (IHS) partners with the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help support Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH), linking the Native American and Alaska Native communities with organizations that conduct health research.
