1776: Oneida and Tuscarora back George Washington

In the American Revolutionary War, the Oneida and Tuscarora tribes side with General George Washington. He informs the Continental Congress that the Indians can “be made ... excellent scouts and light troops.” Washington’s army numbers 250,000 men, of whom about 5,500 are Indians.

Some Native peoples are allies of the British. Most tribes remain neutral, trusting neither Britain nor the colonists.
