1951: No tuberculosis deaths reported in Hawai‘i

For the first time since tuberculosis was diagnosed in the Hawaiian Islands, no deaths are reported in 1951. Before World War II, the occurrence of serious tuberculosis cases was disproportionately high in the islands, and the war at first seemed to increase its incidence among people who were crowded into houses during blackouts. But introduction of antibiotics and other care for tuberculosis patients in Hawai‘i helped public health officials gain control of the epidemic.
