Case 4: Bioterrorism -- Community Preparedness (Page 46 of 49)
Phase Two: Finding the Information

Suggested Solution

Q20. Where would you go to get high-quality books on this topic?

If you are having trouble thinking of sources of high-quality books you might examine the New York Academy of Medicine, Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness. It offers a database of reports and other published material that can help you start thinking about who the most likely publishers might be.

Numerous publications have been written by National Academies' authors and by think tanks such as RAND Corporation on bioterrorism and response to bioterrorism. Examples follow:

The National Library of Medicine's, Disaster Lit: Resource Guide for Disaster Medicine and Public Health has included numerous reports and monographs on its site. Try a search on "bioterrorism" or "preparedness" or on a specific aspect of preparedness to get a sense of what is available.

LocatorPlus is one of the NLM free online catalogs. Use the catalog to search for books on your issues using MeSH. For example, a search on 'bioterrorism AND preparedness' using a 'Keyword Combination Search' retrieved more than 90 records.

If you are in a health department or small library, be aware that the online catalogs of the large university or medical association libraries have organized their collection of materials to make it accessible to their users but you can search their online catalogs to see what resources they have on hand. The books you identify can often be borrowed through interlibrary loan.

Independent publishers are good sources of information on bioterrorism. For example, in 2005, Wiley published the Encyclopedia of Bioterrorism Defense. Articles in this Encyclopedia "review current knowledge across various disciplines within the context of bioterrorism, covering the most recent developments in areas including bioterrorism agents, biodefense infrastructure, biotechnology, preparedness, threats, threat analysis, and legislation." (Table of Contents).

Other publishers including associations also have made a number of valuable documents available on the Web. Be sure to check out the important players module (Module 3) for documents.
