Steps in a Successful Search
This section of the course was prepared for researchers to help them identify key steps in their own searches for material.  Reference librarians will find much of this material is familiar. However, it has been applied to health statistics and illustrated with examples from relevant source materials.]

While there is no uniform sequence for a search, most successful searches include the following steps.

  • Step 1: Define the Goals
  • Step 2: Search Publications
  • Step 3: Use the Internet
  • Step 4: Go to Original Sources
  • Step 5: Assess Resources
  • Step 6: Redefine Requirements
  • Step 7: Renew the Search
