January 1970 through April 2000 5498 Citations Prepared by 2000 May U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES National Library of Medicine Each bibliography in the Current Bibliographies in Medicine (CBM) series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE®, BIOETHICSLINE®, HEALTHSTARTM, LocatorPlus® , POPLINETM, PubMed®, and TOXLINE®. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material is not considered. Other publications in the Current Bibliographies in Medicine series are available at no cost to anyone with Internet access through the Library's World Wide Web site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/resources.html. Comments and suggestions on this series may be addressed to: Karen Patrias, Editor PubMed® and Internet Grateful Med® To make online searching easier and more efficient, the Library offers two user-friendly interfaces to its databases. Both PubMed and Internet Grateful Med are available from the World Wide Web. The user with Internet access need only point a compatible Web browser to the NLM Web site http://www.nlm.nih.gov. No other software at the user end is required. Searching through either PubMed or Internet Grateful Med is free-of-charge. Further information on both PubMed and Internet Grateful Med may be found at the NLM Web site given above. For those users without access to the World Wide Web, please contact the Library's Customer Service Desk at 1-888-FINDNLM (301-594-5983 international) or send e-mail for information on alternative ways to search. Beginning with the 2000 CBMs, two formats are offered: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF documents require the use of the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader, which can be downloaded from Adobe's Web site at no charge. The PDF version of this CBM can be downloaded directly from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/cbm/nutritionsummit.pdf. Citations are formatted according to the rules established for Index Medicus®*. Sample journal and monograph citations appear below. For journal articles written in a foreign language, the English translation of the title is placed in brackets; for monographs, the title is given in the original language. In both cases the language of publication is shown by a three letter abbreviation appearing at the end of the citation. Note also for journal articles that an availability statement follows many citations. This statement contains the Internet address for the citation in the NLM PubMed® retrieval system. The PubMed record includes an abstract for most articles and may also provide a link to the publisher's Internet site. National Nutrition Summit: Information Resources
The National Nutrition Summit, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be held on May 30 and 31, 2000 in Washington, DC. The Summit will provide an opportunity to highlight accomplishments since the 1969 White House Conference in the areas of food security, nutrition, and health. The Summit will identify continuing challenges and emerging opportunities for the Nation in these areas and will focus on nutrition and lifestyle issues across the lifespan, especially those related to the national epidemic of overweight and obesity.
The two day program of the National Nutrition Summit will consist of ten concurrent sessions. Each participant of the meeting will attend one of the sessions. During these sessions the participants will identify the current state of the topic and identify where new policies and research funding are needed. To assist participants in preparing for the breakout sessions, this bibliography was developed by the staff of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The purpose of the bibliography is to provide an overview and background and is not comprehensive on the various topics. The references consist of citations from the professional journal and monographic literature, prominent newspapers, legal materials, and links to Internet sites. The focus of the literature cited is mostly U.S. centered with limited citations on world hunger and nutrition issues. Most of the citations are in English. The date coverage of the literature is 1970 to the present to provide an overview of the literature since the last White House Conference on Nutrition. The citations are grouped by the topics of the ten concurrent sessions; citations may be found in more than one category. Many journal citations which have been retrieved from the NLM PubMed system also contain links to the PubMed record so that abstracts may be obtained if available.
The editors would like to express their appreciation for editing assistance completed by Twann Dailey, Martha Glock, and Phyllis Levine of the Reference Section, National Library of Medicine, in the development of this bibliography.
