he NLM Cataloging Section implemented the 2003 amendments1 to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, 2002 revision, in February of 2004, with the exception of certain sections related to AACR2 rule 21.2A2 "Minor changes" ( see Update on NLM's Position on the Application of Major-Minor Journal Title Change Rules. NLM Tech Bull. 2003 May-Jun;(332):e2.).

Other important changes include:

  • AACR2 24.20C1 through AACR2 24.20C3, the rules for establishing headings for the heads of governments and international intergovernmental organizations were amplified to include the name and years of incumbency for the official, e.g.: United Nations. Secretary-General (1972-1981 : Waldheim). Previously, such headings consisted only of the name of the organization or jurisdiction and the title of the official.
  • In AACR2 Appendix B.14 (Names of Certain Countries, States, Provinces, Territories, etc.), the abbreviation for "Newfoundland and Labrador" has been changed to "N.L." and the previous abbreviation, "Nfld.", now represents the earlier name, "Newfoundland".

1The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, 2002 revision was published in loose-leaf format for updating. Updates to the rules are released annually and NLM expects to adopt future amendments as they are published.
