Space Life Sciences and Bioethics - New PubMed® Subsets

Drop cap graphic of the letter T wo new subject subsets, "Space Life Sciences" and "Bioethics" are available on the Subset pull-down menu on the PubMed Limits screen.

Space Life Sciences Subset
Most, but not all, records in this subset are directly attributable to space flight research. There are also citations to articles that discuss basic research related to space flight. Examples of these include basic bone and muscle physiology, psychological effects of isolation, and gravitational effects on plants.

This subset can also be used in a search as space [sb].

Example: exercise AND space [sb]

The Space Life Sciences subset is a joint project between NLM and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Please see the NLM Technical Bulletin article Space Life Sciences Citations Added to PubMed and the NLM Gateway in this issue for more information on the conversion of Space Life Sciences citations.

Bioethics Subset
This subset contains citations related to the ethical, legal and public policy issues surrounding health care and biomedical research. This subset can also be used in a search as bioethics [sb].

Example: stem cells AND bioethics [sb]

The Bioethics subset is a joint project between NLM and the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE), Georgetown University. The bioethics citations produced by KIE are in the process of being converted to PubMed. Until that conversion is completed the use of the Bioethics subset will retrieve bioethics material currently in MEDLINE/PubMed, but not the material from journals previously indexed only for the former BIOETHICSLINE database.

The Space Life Sciences and Bioethics subject subset strategies are available from the NLM Web site at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/pubmed_subsets.html.
