Authority
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) is based on the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, (ICD-10). ICD-10 is part of the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC).

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is the U.S. governmental agency responsible for overseeing all changes and modifications to the ICD-10-PCS.

Purpose
ICD-10-PCS is being developed as the successor to Volume 3 of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). For more information about ICD-9-CM, see the ICD-9-CM source synopsis (2008AB source information).

ICD-10-PCS will be the official system of assigning codes to procedures associated with hospital utilization in the United States. ICD-10-PCS codes will support data collection, payment and electronic health records.

Description
ICD-10-PCS is a medical classification coding system for procedural codes.

ICD-10-PCS codes are alphanumeric and seven characters long.

Metathesaurus Scope
The UMLS Metathesaurus includes all data from the “long description” and “table description” format files. “General Equivalence Mappings” (GEMs) between ICD-10-PCS 2008 and ICD-9-CM 2007 are also included.

Audience
ICD-10-PCS is intended for use by health care professionals, health care organizations, and insurance programs.

ICD-10-PCS codes are used in a variety of clinical and health care applications for reporting, morbidity statistics, and billing.

Update Frequency
ICD-10-PCS is updated annually.

ICD-10-PCS is a new source in the 2009AA Metathesaurus release.
