The Alcohol and Other Drug Thesaurus: A Guide to Concepts and
Terminology in Substance Abuse and Addiction (AOD), Third
Edition, was developed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The AOD Thesaurus was originally created
by NIAAA in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration Center for Substance Abuse
Prevention (CSAP).
Purpose
AOD serves as a conceptual framework for researchers and
practitioners in the alcohol and other drug field, and as a
controlled vocabulary for indexing and information retrieval in
database systems.
Description
AOD is a collection of over 19,000 terms arranged
hierarchically.

AOD is used by researchers and practitioners in the alcohol
and other drug field.
