2012AA Current Procedural Terminology Source Information
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) is a product of the American Medical Association (AMA).
CPT codes are used by health care professionals for billing of medical services and procedures to public and private health insurance programs.
CPT is a list of descriptive terms and identifying numeric codes for medical services and procedures that are provided by physicians and health care professionals.
CPT codes are compiled in Level 1 of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). For more information about HCPCS, see the HCPCS source synopsis. The HCPCS version of CPT (HCPT) is also included in the Metathesaurus.
CPT in the Metathesaurus should be used in conjunction with the Metathesaurus CPT Hierarchical Terms (MTHCH) source. For more information about MTHCH, see the MTHCH source synopsis.
CPT is used by physicians, health practitioners, and health insurance organizations.
CPT is updated annually by the AMA.
