The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is part of the PRIME-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). The PHQ was developed by Kurt Kroenke, MD, Robert Spitzer, MD, and Janet B.W. Williams, DSW. The PHQ-9 included in the Metathesaurus is extracted from LOINC® and may not be a complete representation of the original source.
Purpose
The PHQ-9 is the nine item depression scale of the Patient Health Questionnaire. The PHQ is a diagnostic tool for mental health disorders used by health care professionals. It is self-administered by patients.
Description
The PHQ-9 is based directly on the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fourth Edition (DSM-IV).
Audience
The PHQ-9 is used by primary care physicians and other health care professionals.
