Authority
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Taxonomy is produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

NCBI Taxonomy is not a primary source for taxonomic or phylogenetic information and should not be cited as an authority.

Purpose
The NCBI Taxonomy incorporates phylogenetic and taxonomic knowledge from a variety of sources, including the published literature, Web-based databases, and the advice of sequence submitters and outside taxonomy experts.

Description
NCBI Taxonomy contains the names of all organisms that are represented in the NCBI genetic databases with at least one nucleotide or protein sequence.

Metathesaurus Scope
The Metathesaurus representation of the NCBI taxonomy includes selected scientific names, synonyms, equivalent names and common names for concepts where a species in the node's lineage has a formal name.

Update Frequency
NCBI Taxonomy is updated regularly.

Metathesaurus Update Frequency
NCBI Taxonomy is updated annually in the Metathesaurus.
