Summary of Program Features
The significant features of the
program design have helped us solve most of the problems
encountered in teaching cross-sectional anatomy.
- First, the program provides orientation for the student on
viewing body sections, CTs, and MRIs.
- The program also offers flexible learning strategies,
including an interactive tutorial and a mode for quick review of
structures.
- In addition, the program includes an atlas section for
side-by-side comparison of correlated images.
- The testing
module produces a randomized series of 30 questions using
high-quality images from the database, and allows both self- and
instructor-evaluation.
- Finally, the inclusion of case studies based on grand rounds
presentations provides a clinical context for the cross-sectional
material.
The tutorial module was constructed
to simulate one-on-one instruction with an interactive
question-answer format and immediate feedback and additional
comments. The student avoids being overwhelmed by the material
by viewing one structure at a time, and can appreciate the extent
of a structure via the outlines provided. In addition, the
tutorial permits self-paced learning.
The testing module improved our
evaluation procedures by incorporating high-quality images, and
allowing self-evaluation via practice quizzes. The students
receive immediate feedback during the quiz, and may review
incorrect answers after completing the quiz. The instructor may
monitor the students' scores, as well as examine question
analyses to highlight areas of difficulty for individual students
or for the class as a whole.
