Summary

We have described an innovative software engine for access and display of the Visible Human Project data sets. Its features include:

the fact that it runs on affordable off-the-shelf hardware, multiplying the possibility of access and distribution for the results of the Visible Human Project,
flexible, interactive interfaces with the possibility of additional interfaces for other applications,
the ability to handle data sets of any size, limited only by disk capacity, not computer RAM,
the ability to digitally enhance imagery during animations.

Currently, applications of this software includes:

Public Museum and Science Centers,
Segmenting the Visible Human Project data sets,
Front-end to large digital libraries,
Browsing the Visible Human Project data sets or other large image libraries over a local area network or Internet.

With the option to browse the future Visible Human Project data sets that can be as large as several terabytes, the possibilities for this central software engine are limited only by imagination and experience.
