The June 2008 full release files are available for download from the UMLSKS. These files are consistent with the 2008AA UMLS Metathesaurus release files.

UMLS 2008AA Release Mailed to Users in New Packaging

The 2008AA release of the UMLS Knowledge Sources on DVD was mailed to users in environmentally friendly self-mailers made from recycled paper. Users who have requested a DVD will receive a copy. To request a DVD, send an e-mail to custserv@nlm.nih.gov and include your license code.

NLM Invites Nominations for IHTSDO Standing Committees

UMLS Web Services Sample Application V1.0

A new user contribution has been added to the UMLS Community Web page. The application is a sample client written in C# that connects to the UMLSKS Web Services API and retrieves spelling suggestions for a given term.

IHTSDO Seeking Proposals for Terminology Toolset

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) is seeking proposals for the supply and maintenance of a SNOMED CT multi-lingual modular workbench that will host terminology editing, translation, mapping, and other applications. Intentions to bid are due by July 26, 2008 and proposals will be due by September 5, 2008. Copies of the RFP are available at https://ihtsdo.projects.openhealthtools.org.

UMLS Basics Tutorial

The brand-new UMLS Basics is now available. UMLS Basics is a Web-based tutorial that enables anyone with Internet access to learn about the UMLS. It is designed for novice UMLS users who have some knowledge of controlled vocabularies and related topics, and covers material normally presented in the UMLS Basics one day course taught at the NLM.

UMLS Source Release Documentation

New Source Release Documentation pages are now available from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/sourcereleasedocs/index.html. This documentation is designed to help users select sources that are useful to their applications and to understand how sources are represented in Metathesaurus format.

New UMLS Webcasts

The first two UMLS webcasts of 2009 are now available for registration. The topics are “RxNorm Update, MyMedicationList, and DailyMed” presented by Dr. Stuart Nelson on January 29 and “UMLS Source Release Documentation” presented by Rachel Kleinsorge on February 26. Additional topics will be announced as plans are finalized.

New UMLS Downloads Web Page

UMLS-related downloads have been moved from the UMLSKS to the new Downloads Web page on the UMLS Web site. If the file requires a UMLS account, you will be prompted for your UMLSKS Login ID and Password. You will only have to enter your Login ID and Password once per browser session.

UMLS Web Site Reorganization

The UMLS Web site will be reorganized and redesigned in mid-September. Information will be divided into four new categories: New Users, User Education, Knowledge Sources, and Implementation Resources. A new list of 'Quick Links' to popular UMLS Web pages will also be featured. The reorganized pages will be discussed in an upcoming Technical Bulletin article.

UMLSKS Scheduled Downtime

The UMLSKS will be unavailable on Monday, September 21, from 8:00 - 5:00 pm ET. Both the Web interface and the Web services API will be unavailable during this time. Access for downloading UMLS files, however, will not be affected. UMLS files are available in the “Downloads” area of the UMLS Web site.
