IHTSDO Seeking Proposals for Terminology Toolset

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) is seeking proposals for the supply and maintenance of a SNOMED CT multi-lingual modular workbench that will host terminology editing, translation, mapping, and other applications. New UMLS Webcasts

New UMLS Downloads Web Page

UMLS Web Site Reorganization

The file names and directory structure have changed, and the International Release is now distributed as a single zipped file that includes the resources previously distributed in the “Essential” and “Optional” files. The single zipped file contains the SNOMED CT terminology, cross maps, subsets, documentation, and US drug extension. Updated UMLS Source Release Documentation

The 2010AB UMLS Source Release Documentation Web pages are now live. In addition, all Metathesaurus sources are now included in the documentation. A synopsis, statistics, and sample data are included for each source that has been updated in the Metathesaurus since 2008AB. A synopsis is included for older sources. The revised Source Release Documentation homepage provides links to source pages for all Metathesaurus sources.

UMLSKS Retirement, User Reporting

The UMLSKS will be retired on January 31, 2011. To retain access to UMLS-related applications and UMLS resources, you must request a new license through the UTS ("Sign Up") and activate your account. The Sign Up link is located in the upper right corner of the UTS homepage.

The UMLS Annual Report and semi-annual IHTSDO Affiliate License Statement of Account (for SNOMED CT® use) are due on January 31, 2011. You must complete the reporting requirements through the UTS after requesting a license and activating your UTS account.

Convergent Medical Terminology (CMT)

The Convergent Medical Terminology (CMT), developed by Kaiser Permanente, is now available from the Downloads menu of the UTS. CMT is now available through the IHTSDO as a donation of the terminology content, tooling, and maintenance processes from Kaiser Permanente. It is available through NLM to UMLS Metathesaurus licensees.

New UMLS Quick Start Guide

The new UMLS Quick Start Guide gives an overview of the Unified Medical Language System. Its intended audience is the entire spectrum of UMLS users, from the medical librarian, to the hospital administrator who needs to contract with an EHR vendor who uses UMLS, to the software engineers who need to use UMLS for application development. Each brief section points to more technical documentation in the right side bars.

NLM Supports RESTful API to Verify UMLS License Codes

NLM now supports a RESTful interface, through the UTS, that allows developers to verify that users have an active UMLS license code. Application developers must be authorized distributors of UMLS data to use this service. More information is available under Technical in the Documentation menu of the UTS.

Nursing Problem List Subset of SNOMED CT®

The first version of the Nursing Problem List Subset of SNOMED CT is now available from both the SNOMED CT and Downloads menus of the UTS. The subset, intended for use in patients’ problem lists, is an output of the Metathesaurus that is based on nursing diagnosis concepts found within the Metathesaurus. The main purpose of the subset is to facilitate the use of SNOMED CT as the primary coding terminology for nursing problems used in care planning, problem lists or other summary level clinical documentation.

Marc Horowitz, Chair of the Affiliate Forum (AF) of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO), invites SNOMED CT Affiliates to participate in an conference call on the 28th June (time: 20:00 – 21:30 UTC). The UMLS Metathesaurus License includes the SNOMED CT Affiliate Licence as Appendix 2, and all UMLS licensees are SNOMED CT Affiliates by default. This conference call is part of a direct outreach program to better understand affiliates’ needs and requirements. The update corrects errors from the previously released Cross Map Revision and replaces that version. It is available for download on the UMLS Web site as of August 29. The UMLS reporting requirements for 2011 are now available. You must complete the UMLS Annual Report and the IHTSDO Affiliate License Statement of Account (for SNOMED CT users only) by January 31, 2012. If you do not complete the reporting requirements by this deadline, your UTS account will be deactivated. To access the reports, sign in to the UTS and click ‘My Profile’.

The preview version provides mapping from 7,277 SNOMED CT concepts. NLM will provide an updated version mapping from approximately 15,000 SNOMED CT concepts in June 2012.

The new ICD-9-CM to SNOMED CT Map is available for download by UMLS licensees. The map will facilitate the translation of legacy ICD-9-CM data to SNOMED CT and aid the transition to use of SNOMED CT for patient problem lists. The download consists of two files (one-to-one maps and one-to-many maps), which include usage frequencies of ICD-9-CM codes based on CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) data, and SNOMED CT concepts from the CORE Problem List Subset.

ADA and IHTSDO Agree to Licensing Arrangements

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the IHTSDO announce a licensing agreement to incorporate ADA dental diagnostic codes into SNOMED CT. The ADA Systematized Nomenclature of Dentistry (SNODENT) will be included in the SNOMED CT International Release. As part of this agreement, the IHTSDO Content Committee will form an International Dentistry Specialty Interest Group (Dental SIG). For more information see the IHTSDO News Announcement.

The IHTSDO released an updated version of the July 2012 International Release. The update corrects errors in the RF1 Relationships file (sct1_Relationships_Core_INT_20120731.txt) and replaces the previously released version. It is available for download on the UMLS Web site as of August 9. Users should download and use the updated file.

New CMT Downloads Available

The ENT, Gastrointestinal, Infectious Diseases Problem List Subset (CMT) is available for download. The subset includes 3,584 concepts.

The CMT Enterprise Terminology Tool (ETT) is a new download available from NLM. Kaiser Permanente uses the ETT for the creation, management and quality assurance of its terminology products such as the CMT subsets. The ETT is an installation of the IHTSDO Workbench. Note: NLM does not provide technical support for the ETT.

SNOMED CT: US Edition, March 2013

NLM announces the release of the US Edition of SNOMED CT. The US Edition combines the International Release of SNOMED CT and US-specific content previously found in the US Extension to SNOMED CT. It eliminates the need for users to combine the two products. The US Edition is the official source of SNOMED CT for use in US healthcare systems.
The download contains files in both Release Format 1 (RF1) and Release Format 2 (RF2) versions. NLM will provide an updated US Edition approximately one month after each International Release update.
