Search Strategies

You can use these search terms in specific databases or in the Web search engine.

PubMed and Other NLM Databases

To search PubMed and other NLM databases:

  1. At the PubMed home page,
    1. Enter your search terms and click "Search."
    2. On the left side of the page, find Filters.
    3. Under "Article Type," check "Congresses," "Consensus Development Conference," "Consensus Development Conference, NIH," "Electronic Supplementary Materials."
    4. Click "Search." This sets your search limits.
    5. Under "Article Type," click "Congresses."
    6. Repeat Step 5 for each article type you selected in Step 3.
    7. You will see the search results numbers change. You will also see a link near the top, middle of the page that reads, "Filters activated."
  2. Add to your search strategy: (conference OR meeting OR symposium OR workshop OR presentation OR paper OR poster) AND statistics
  3. Add to your search strategy: (conference proceedings OR conference abstracts OR poster sessions OR meeting abstracts OR annual meeting) AND 2011 : 2014[pdat]

In PubMed, PubMed Central® (PMC), or TOXNET®:

Search strategies:

  • annual meeting [ti] AND abstracts AND (other term). Example: annual meeting [ti] AND abstracts AND cell biology
  • annual meeting [ti] AND posters
  • annual meeting [ti] AND (posters OR papers OR abstracts)
  • ((annual meeting [ti] OR conference [ti] OR symposium [ti] OR workshop [ti] OR proceedings [ti] ) AND (posters OR papers OR abstracts))
  • proceedings [ti]
  • papers [ti] AND meeting [ti]
  • Conference name or acronym of the conference name. Examples are:
    • Symposium on Biomedical Imaging
    • ISBI

DMOZ: Open Directory Project

Type "conference abstracts" or similar terms to get a list of links to conference abstracts.

DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals

Type "conference abstracts" or similar terms to get a list of links to conference abstracts.

Google (Search Engine, Google Books, Google Scholar, and YouTube)

  • Type "international congress proceedings abstracts" inside or outside of the quotation marks.
  • You can switch to Google Books and retrieve a list of links to conference proceedings. Note: full, partial, or no preview may be available.
  • Use Google Scholar to retrieve a list of links to conference proceedings, papers, abstracts, and poster presentations.
  • Use YouTube to find watch tutorials explaining how to find conference documents. YouTube also contains videotaped conference presentations.

Scopus from Elsevier

Search Strategy: TITLE-ABS-KEY (conference proceedings OR conference abstracts OR poster sessions OR meeting abstracts OR annual meeting).

You can limit by many fields, including author and year(s).

Scopus is available through institutional membership or institutional subscription.

EMBASE from Elsevier is also available from OVIDSP.

For Thompson Reuters databases:

  • Step 1: Type in your subject (search as a topic) and click "Search."
  • Step 2: Click "Publication Type" on the left side of the page.
  • Step 3: Limit search to "Conference Abstract," "Conference Paper," or "Conference Review." You can also limit by the title of the conference by clicking the "Conference" filter to select the specific conference.

Limit search to Title for:

  • "conference proceedings",
  • "congresses", and
  • "congresses as topic"
