FAQ: Who Has Cited a Reference?

Question: Can I search MEDLINE (using PubMed) to find out how many times an article, author, or journal has been cited?

Answer:

MEDLINE/PubMed does not indicate the number of times an article, author, or journal is cited or provide journal impact factor information.

Citations in PubMed with information regarding a cited article derive from PubMed Central (PMC). Links for these related citations are displayed in PubMed on the right sidebar under the heading Cited by [X number] PubMed Central articles.

Check with a librarian at your local medical or university library for help locating non-NLM resources that have citation and impact factor information such as Google Scholar, SCOPUS, ISI Web of Knowledge® (Web of Science, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index) and Journal Citation Reports.
