FAQ: NLM® LocatorPlus® -- What is Unicode?

Question: What is Unicode?
Answer:

Unicode is the universal character encoding standard maintained by the Unicode Consortium. By using more than one byte to represent each character, Unicode can represent almost all characters for the writing systems of the world, modern and ancient, as well as technical symbols, punctuations, and many other special characters used in writing text. For more information, visit the Unicode Consortium at http://www.unicode.org/
