DB / Metadata Management Program (MMP): Using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®) in Cataloging

Diseases vs. Organisms

  • MeSH distinguishes between diseases and the organism that causes the disease
    Example:
    • Salmonella is a type of bacteria and is located in the B3 Organisms-Bacteria tree
    • The disease caused by Salmonella is Salmonella Infections located in the C (Diseases) tree
    • The MeSH annotation or scope note will generally link you from the organism to the disease

MeSH Heading for Bacteria

  • In this example, the annotation on the record for Yersinia refers to two possible choices for infection

Corresponding Disease

  • The scope note on Yersinia Infections refers back to Yersinia
