Check Your Characters

If you need to search PubMed using a systematic name for a chemical, remove the brackets and parentheses and replace them with a hyphen (if there isn’t one, already).  Brackets and parentheses have specific search functions in PubMed. Don't remove commas or prime symbols (') from systematic names.

Examples of correct PubMed searches for systematic names
Systematic Name: Search:

1-[(3,5-dichloro)-2,6-dihydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl]-1-hexanone

1-3,5-dichloro-2,6-dihydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl-1-hexanone

2,2-(2-chlorophenyl-4'-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethene

2,2-2-chlorophenyl-4'-chlorophenyl-1,1-dichloroethene

For Greek characters (e.g., α or β), you can enter the symbol OR spell out the letter.

For example:
interleukin-1β
and
interleukin-1beta
are the same search in PubMed.
