How to Create a URL for Displaying Your Library Icon

Here we will explain the different ways to create a specialized URL for your library patrons to use when accessing PubMed. You can also refer to the Localizing PubMed for Your Users section of the LinkOut: Information for Libraries Help.

1. Start with the PubMed URL: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed

2. Use the table below to determine the appropriate Parameter for the LinkOut Service(s) you use at your library.

LinkOut Service

Parameter

Effect

LinkOut OR LinkOut Local

?holding=NameAbbr*

Displays your library's' icons on select PubMed citations

Outside Tool

?otool=NameAbbr*

Displays your library's' Outside Tool icon on all PubMed citations

Document Delivery

?tool=NameAbbr*

Sets the Document Delivery Service to be used when a user selects Send to Order in PubMed

My NCBI Shared account

?myncbishare=MyNCBIUserName

Turns on your library's' My NCBI Preferences in PubMed

*Remember the NameAbbr is given to you when you register your library with LinkOut. If you do not have your NameAbbr please use the Contact NLM button in NLM Customer Support to reach the LinkOut team.

3. Now combine the pieces from 1. and 2. together.

Example:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed + ?holding=psrmlib =

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=psrmlib

The above URL causes the icons for the psrmlib library to appear on PubMed citations.

NOTE: Library icons only appear on the Abstract format of PubMed citations.

Displaying icons for multiple libraries

To display the library icons of multiple libraries use an ampersand (&) in the URL. Note: it is not possible to display multiple Outside Tool icons in PubMed.

Examples:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=nihlib&holding=psrmlib

The above URL triggers the Outside Tool icon for the nihlib library to appear on every citation in PubMed and the library icons for the psrmlib library to appear.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=f1000&holding=psrmlib

The above URL causes the Faculty of 1000 Biology icon and the library icons for the psrmlib library to appear on PubMed citations.

More options your can use in your URL

There are additional options that you can use in your specialized URL. This table shows the available modifications and their effects.

Parameter

Modification

Effect

?holding= NameAbbr

Add _fft after the NameAbbr

?holding=NameAbbr_fft

Displays your library's' icons on PubMed citations in your library's' holdings & on all PubMed citations with links to free full text.**

?holding=NameAbbr

Add _fft_ndi after the NameAbbr

?holding=NameAbbr_fft_ndi

Same as above & the publisher icons do NOT appear on PubMed citations.**

?holding=, ?otool=, ?myncbishare=

Replace the NameAbbr with __reset (2 underscores(_))

?holding=__reset

?otool=__reset

?myncbishare=__reset

Resets PubMed to default display. Your library icons will not display.

**Will cause library's' online or print icon to appear on PubMed citations that have free full text links. Library icons (online or print) will resolve to the web site where the free full text article is hosted.

Example:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=psrmlib_fft_ndi

The above URL would be used to display the library icons for the psrmlib library AND display the psrmlib Online icon on all PubMed citations with links to free full text AND omit default publisher icons from displaying.
