Staff Scientist 1 in Bioinformatics

POSITION INFORMATION:  

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is recruiting for a Staff Scientist 1 with demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics methods development. The position is in the Computational Biology Branch (CBB), which is a part of the Intramural Research Program (IRP). NLM is one of 27 Institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

This candidate will be responsible for:

  • devising a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of cancer and other diseases though developing new algorithmic and machine learning (ML) methods, data integration, and modelling of gene regulation and disease progression;
  • performing research in the specified area;
  • providing computational support to the research group to develop web-based applications and data processing; and
  • participating in mentoring junior group members including postdoctoral fellows, students, and postbaccalaureate fellows.

POSITION REQUIRMENTS:

The ideal candidate may or may not be a United States citizen and must have a doctoral degree.

We are looking for an individual with:

  • a Ph.D. in computer science, bioinformatics, or a similar quantitative field;
  • at least five years of research experience after receiving the final degree, such as postdoctoral research and/or equivalent experience;
  • a strong track record in research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications;
  • proven experience in developing novel computational methods in biomedical sciences;
  • experience in working with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS); and
  • a proven ability to work both independently and as a team member.

Priority will be given to a candidate with expertise in advanced ML methods and/or network biology.

SALARY/BENEFITS:

This non-competitive appointment in the excepted service is similar to a federal full-time position. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. A full package of benefits is available.
