MEET LOCAL LEGEND: Jeanne E. Grove, D.O.

Jeanne E. Grove, D.O.

“I was at a point in my life at which I wanted to build on my nursing experience. After considering a Ph.D. in nursing, however, I decided medicine offered more options. So, with the unwavering support of my father, and husband, Sam, who was a physician, I went to medical school to become a cardiologist. But obstetrics and gynecology became my passion because I could do surgery and take care of women!”

“UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO PATIENTS...”

BIOGRAPHY

"I catch babies!" exclaims Jeanne Grove. "How many? Thousands. And it's a miracle every time, one of the most beautiful things to do for a living."

In the twenty years Grove has been "catching babies" and tending to their mothers' needs, she has earned a special place in the heart of the greater Rochester community.

"In my opinion, the outstanding trait that embodies Dr. Grove is her unwavering commitment to her patients," said Nancy Adams, executive director of the Monroe County Medical Society, in support of Grove's nomination by Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28) as a Local Legend of Medicine. "To be cared for by Dr. Grove is to know the true meaning of medicine. She is a role model for the women she cares for and the physicians for whom she advocates in her many committee and board roles."

Commenting on her "illustrious career," Rep. Slaughter emphasized that Grove "has a tremendous amount of respect and admiration from her colleagues and neighbors throughout our community."

After interning and completing a three-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rochester General Hospital, Grove opened her own private practice and also was appointed Senior Attending Physician at both Rochester General and Highland Hospitals, with admitting privileges. At the same time, she became Associate Attending Obstetrician-Gynecologist, with admitting privileges, and Clinical Instructor, at Strong memorial Hospital, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

To this day, she maintains these and other important community and medical positions, including having served as president of the Medical Board of the Rochester General Hospital Medical and Dental Staff, president of the Monroe County Medical Society, chair of the Foundation Gala of the Rochester General Hospital Foundation in both 2002 and 2003, and chair of the 2002-03 United Way Campaign, Monroe County Medical Division.

Grove ardently believes medicine is "the best job in the world" for women. "If they want to do it, medicine can be the most beautiful career because there are so many options. You cannot buy the satisfaction you get from seeing and helping people at their most difficult-and happiest times. It is just such a privilege."

In her opinion, the best doctors are those who maintain their commitment. "It takes a lot to be good," she says. "You must have the stamina and be willing to compromise in the sense that you have to constantly work at medicine and you don't have the personal freedom you might want or think you have; for example, to travel. You wish for more time.

"Medicine is a selfless profession," she concludes.

During her tenure in 2002-03 as president of the Monroe County Medical Society, Grove put her belief into action, initiating the Coalition of Volunteer Health Providers, which solicits physicians to either treat patients in their practice pro bono or volunteer their time directly treating patients at the St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center or the Mercy Outreach Center. The program continues to expand each year.

In 2003, the Women's Council of the Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce nominated Grove for the 17th annual Athena Award, honoring local businesswomen.
