High numbers of red blood cells may indicate:

  • Cigarette smoking
  • Low oxygen tension in the blood
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Cor pulmonale
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Dehydration (such as from severe diarrhea)
  • Emphysema
