Nainoa Thompson is the chair of the board of trustees for Kamehameha Schools, and a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Hawai‘i. Born in Honolulu, Thompson holds the title of Master Navigator and for more than two decades has been lead navigator on the voyages of the Hōkūle‘a, including the Voyage of Rediscovery in the mid-1980s.
