Case 4: Bioterrorism -- Community Preparedness (Page 30 of 49)
Phase Two: Finding the Information

Q12. What resources can you use to assess the quality of the site's or a document's content? Why should you assess the quality of a site's content?

Suggested Solution

Since librarians began applying evaluation criteria to assess the quality of content on the Web, numerous sites have come and gone but the quality has continued to improve.

Two sites in particular containing guidelines or bibliographies on evaluating web information offer sound advice.

Some guidelines for assessing quality can be found on the MedlinePlus Web site (MedlinePlus, 2006).

Another resource for the evaluation of Web sites can be found on Virginia Tech's library Web site, Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Information (Auer, 2004).

What other sites or criteria do you use to establish quality?
