Some procedures are specifically developed to collect health statistics.

The National Health Interview Survey has been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics for the past five decades. This survey collects information about health status, conditions and characteristics of the population as reported by survey respondents.

Specialized household surveys collect data on risky behaviors, drug use, insurance coverage and payments.

Surveys of hospitals and physicians compile data on the care provided to patients.
