Federal payers –notably the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services publish reports that provide statistical summaries of their records. Private insurance companies also use their own records to support studies focused on care and costs. Much of this research is published in scholarly journals, but a large part is not accessible outside of the sponsoring organizations.
Researchers have proposed the creation of a National Health Data Warehouse which could be a central source of statistical data records from private sources. However, this type of facility has not been created.
